DC Antiquity - Wonder Woman by dustsplat DC Antiquity - Wonder Woman by dustsplat
-Rough character design sketch done as an exercise for fun for myself. Wanted to take the iconic DC characters and redesign them to fit in a more medieval antiquity world. Thinking what type of characters they would grow to be if they had to deal with the morals and ways of living of that era-

I saw Wonder Woman's character as someone who had to juggle the pressures of not only being a super hero, but also being a leader to her people and staying true to the customs of her culture, and on top of that, a daughter who didn't want to disappoint her mother.

I wanted her costume to not only reflect that she was a warrior, but also someone of somewhat high status and wisdom.

I enjoyed working on her:)

I quite like this whole series you've done, Batman in particular, but this Wonder Woman has a subtle grace to her I so rarely see in a lot of depictions to her that I think is vital to her character. Awesome work.

You know. Seeing as Wonder Woman is basically a classical Amazon taken to the comic book world, why has no one thought to put her in something like this? I mean really, it isn't that hard. Just take the "Superhearoin one piece" and give it a hoplite skirt to go with it and maybe like a braided rope for shoulder straps of somekind to make her look like a Grecian warrior with that comic style to it. I think that have been a better idea than the tight pants that happened recently.

I love this, not only is it drawn wonderfuly, but I love how you drew her! She's actually buff and looks like she can kick but in a battle! And I love her outfit! It's an actual outfit that a woman could fight in and not be afraid that her stuff is gonna fall out if you know what I mean... -__- but yeah, this is really great work. :)

Wow - the stocky build fits so perfectly. Nice job!

If anything, this outfit you've given Wonder Woman looks more like something I would expect an Amazon to wear.

I am a huge fan of this series of work. I would love to see this in comic book form. A medieval/fantasy take on traditional DC comics would definitely be a fun read. Especially with your take on Batman. That is by far my favourite of this series, though I've only commented on this one since I wanted to look through all the pictures first. Each of them fit the character's original concept well.

Superman is a natural fit as a knight in armor with his red cape and the S crest on his breastplate. Lex Luthor molds naturally into the medieval aristocratic role that you portrayed him, though I'll admit looking at the picture before clicking on it I thought he was missing his right arm. I quickly realized it was behind his back though when I clicked on the picture itself.

Wonder Woman was meant to be in this role, it would seem. The way she was raised even in the stories had her primed to be recreated in antiquity and I love the detail you put into her armor. The owl on her shoulder was a nice touch, as well. All in all this is an amazing series I would love to see more DC characters. The Flash, the Green Lantern, Aquaman, the Green Arrow. Hopefully we'll get to see many more of these characters. If only I could find a comic book that depicted these characters this way...

I like this look. I like for the top to be attached. This would give a more real look going into battle. Less of a bikini look and more of a ancient greco-roman look. resemble the goddess athena with the owl. The scandals am feeling them. Wow great! the outfit is mid age look as well. Giving her a ageless and timeless look of greco-roman-mid age look. She will fit well in the village.

I love how strong she looks! This is such a fun concept

This is so well done! I absolutely love seeing redesigns, and yours is pretty much the apex of that. The rendering of the armor and other textures of her costume is superb.
I also love the fact that you included the owl; a nice nod to Greek mythology ;)

Plus (this is irrelevant to the piece), this was uploaded on my birthday, so of course I have to comment.
Love the entire series and can't wait for what your art has in store for us in the future.!

Thanks for sharing.

This is just awesome! I love how you look at the Heroine and changed her. I love that she has an owl. This take on Wonder Woman ROCKS! In a perfect world, this could be used as a basis for an Elseworlds for the Amazon. That would be COOL!

This is amazing. I wish WW had an owl now.

YES! I love seeing a Wonder Woman with enough muscle mass to make it look like she could suplex you without batting an eye. It's a nice touch tying her to Athene and Greek myth roots with the owl as well.

Why did you choose an owl?
CelticBotan Featured By Owner Jan 6, 2012  Professional Digital Artist
Probably because the owl is the symbol of Athena, the greek goddess of wisdom and war =D

I really love her outfit- it's both feminine and powerful. Her body shape and overall stance reminds me of Xena here, which is fitting I think. Love the shoes. :la:

RUshN Featured By Owner Jan 4, 2012
Im am sure you ENJOYED working all up on her! *grin*

Well, some crit, sorry, hate doing it.
Her out fit still looks greek/roman with the skirt and the sandals.
For medieval look, Joan of Arc comes to mind covered in armor, not the bulging boob armor, but regular medieval armor.

The face is beautiful!
Lolz, I like the owl too, its like - "What son, you want some of this? "
SolusUmbra Featured By Owner Jan 4, 2012   Digital Artist
You do realize that greece was still around during the medieval era, right? Still, despite the fact that dustsplat said medieval in his post, I doubt that he is holding himself strictly to that time period.
RUshN Featured By Owner Jan 4, 2012
When I say Greek/Roman, I mean the cultures in their golden age.
The reason I said that is: The character of wonder woman is often depicted as a Greek goddess or something, I dont know the story but it looks like ancient Greece was the origin for that character, so it is a natural look for her.

Just though it would be more interesting not to depict the character as it has been depicted before, don't you agree?
SolusUmbra Featured By Owner Jan 4, 2012   Digital Artist
This is as she has never been depicted. There's always been this wretched american patriotism surrounding her and her costume (even as an american, I have no use for patriotic comic characters), and its nice to see her without it. She has a more classical appearance, which I very much appreciate.
RUshN Featured By Owner Jan 4, 2012
Fine, I agree.
